Planning my party's (in-game) Christmas presents, which will look like toys but secretly all have a tiny but useful magical effect.

I'm currently running the adventure Storm King's Thunder which handles levelling up with milestones - so far it's been a pretty rapid (at least it feels like it) advancement of levelling up after every session/area. I know there's a sandbox-y section in the middle of the book where levelling may slow down but getting my head around the player-power increase each session is tricky after only DMing for level 1 PCs for my first few games.

DM question: is there any way to give a player a curse of some kind (to introduce a "find a way to dispel the curse" side-plot) that doesn't either get annoying and unfun (bc the curse is too detrimental) or inconsequential (bc the curse effect is so minimal)?
I had a player get Bestow Curse cast on him and I was toying with the idea of the curse being a more general one than just "Disadvantage against the caster" (since caster is now dead).

Wondering if there's a way to use my kid's "Story Cubes" in somehow. Maybe they visit a seer who scatters some magic bones carved with pictograms to foretell the future.

Every so often I look on Gumtree/eBay/etc for second-hand to use in but mostly the fantasy/castle stuff is all re-sold at a premium since Lego don't offer anything like that currently. Occasionally you get lucky with someone selling off stuff just to get rid of it (as opposed to a profit-minded reseller) - I just scored a 2nd-hand LotR ship for £45 which is a steal given the same set goes for £150+ new on eBay. Has a few figures missing but still a bargain.

Akira Kurosawa supposedly said that a film should appeal to sophisticated people, while at the same time being enjoyable for simplistic people.

I think this is also true for adventures. A Dungeon Master who foregoes slapstick, banter, flowery descriptions, and the like, will also not be able to pull off a grand epic with hidden layers or an intriguing mystery.

Entertainment is not "padding," it's the vanishing mediator that keeps your audience libidinally invested in the story.

Halloween report: It went pretty well, I did a lot of planning which I don't want to always have to do but the session was fairly heavily scripted to get that zombie siege feel. I think the 1HP "minion" zombies (which the party never quite cottoned onto?) were good bc I could throw waves and waves of them at the party. In the end it was maybe not quite as tough as I would have like it (one character got a *massive* crit on the Final Boss), but I think I hit the right notes.

1 day until I run the zombie siege Halloween session. Prep is nearly done; there's a bit of unknown on how hard or easy it will be for the party (since I'm using a 4e adventure converted to 5e for a level 3 party, and my party are level 2) but there's a lot of scope for tweaking the difficulty on-the-fly. I've even got some good audio of storms & zombies to make it more atmospheric.

This is what awaits my party next week at the Halloween session - a desecrated temple and a mysterious skull.

Anyone used 4e-style minion enemies (1HP each so PCs can mow through hordes of them) in 5e ? I'm planning on using minion zombies in my Halloween game for that feel of slicing through endless undead. I've seen this but wondering if anyone has done something similar:

I was never into zombie/horror films really but writing a Halloween thing based on them is fun as shit.

And on that subject (of & ), I've found the soundtrack for our next session; this:

Has anyone made a Cabin In The Woods-style spooky adventure, where the party can trigger different monsters depending on what they do?

For the Halloween session I was going to do this "possessed scarecrow hunts PCs in a cornfield" side-quest:

session 2: Two more treasure hunts were completed (one was even successful), a necklace made of human ears was found and collected by the druid (?!), strange dreams led to mysterious gifts, and we're rounding on the end of the opening adventure. One more treasure to find and then we'll level up and probably start on Storm King's Thunder proper.
